How far should a sofa be from the TV? The simple rule and a size table

The distance between your sofa and your TV decides whether a living room feels comfortable or cramped. Sit too close and a big screen tires your eyes; sit too far and you lose the detail you paid for. The good news: there is one simple rule that works for almost any room, and a quick table that turns it into exact centimetres.

How far should a sofa be from the TV?

Plan at least two screen diagonals between the seated viewer and the screen. For a 55-inch TV that is about 2.8 m; for a 65-inch TV about 3.3 m. Measure from the front of the sofa cushion to the face of the screen, not from the back of the sofa. If the room forces you closer than that, choose a smaller screen rather than pushing the sofa against the opposite wall.

What distance for each TV size?

The rule is "diagonal × 2". The table below does the maths for the common sizes, with a comfortable range around the ideal.

TV sizeIdeal distance (≈2 diagonals)Comfortable range
43″2.2 m1.9–2.4 m
50″2.5 m2.2–2.8 m
55″2.8 m2.4–3.1 m
65″3.3 m2.9–3.7 m
75″3.8 m3.3–4.3 m

If your room is shorter than the ideal distance, drop one TV size. A 55-inch screen at 2.4 m looks better than a 65-inch screen crammed into the same spot.

What height should the TV be?

Mount the TV so the centre of the screen sits at seated eye level — about 1.05 to 1.20 m above the floor. A screen hung high over a fireplace forces you to tilt your head back, which is tiring over a whole film. If the TV must go above a mantel, pick the smallest size that still reads from the sofa, and tilt it down slightly.

How to check it before you buy

  • Measure the real seated distance: front of the sofa to the wall where the TV will hang.
  • Divide that distance by two to get the largest diagonal that fits — e.g. 3.0 m ÷ 2 = a 1.5 m diagonal ≈ 59″, so a 55″ is the safe pick.
  • Keep the main walking route past the TV at least 80 cm wide, and leave 40–45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table.
  • Plan a socket behind the screen (about 1.10 m) and one low by the console (about 0.30 m) so no cable crosses the floor.

The surest way to know a size works is to see it in the room. In 3DRoom you type your room size and TV, and the designer places the sofa at the right distance, checks the screen height, and shows it to you in interactive 3D in about a minute — change the TV size and watch the distance update live.
