Biophilic

About this design

Biophilic design brings the outdoors in. Five plants, two monsteras, a snake plant, a hanging plant and a pot on the TV shelf, fill the corners and the window zone, and a green corner at the end of the room becomes part of the 220 cm wardrobe. Almost every piece of furniture is made from something that grew: linen on the IKEA EKTORP sofa, rattan and bamboo on the AGEN chair, cane inserts in the wardrobe and the TV unit, and a live-edge solid-wood slab desk under the window. The coffee table is a section of tree trunk. The walls are warm off-white with a concrete-grey accent, and a kilim-pattern rug in sand and moss green ties the earthy shades together. A paper pendant gives soft light. The palette of sand, moss and walnut brown is the calmest in the series. Two items, the slab desk and the trunk table, are made to order, so this design suits people who enjoy sourcing from local workshops. Plants need light, which is why the window zone is kept clear.

Layouts

Layout scheme A

Scheme A: sofa on the left wall, TV on the right wall, desk by the window, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe on the end wall. In Biophilic the wardrobe is 220 cm wide instead of full width, which frees the corner of the end wall for a green corner with plants. The desk sits under the window, so plants and workspace share the daylight.

Each style uses one of four proven layouts. The plans are schematic; the window is at the top, the entrance door on the right, the wardrobe at the bottom.

Best for

Plant lovers, families with children and anyone who wants a calm, natural room with visible texture. It suits a sunny room where plants can thrive.

Tips

Choose plants that match your light: snake plants and monsteras tolerate low light, while ferns and herbs need more. Water-proof the wood near pots with trays. Choose a slab with a stable, dry surface and have it sealed. Keep the plant count realistic: five healthy plants look better than fifteen struggling ones.

FAQ

Questions about the Biophilic design

How many plants are in the Biophilic design?

The scene has five plants: two monsteras, a snake plant, a hanging plant and a small potted plant on the TV shelf, plus a green corner built into the end of the wardrobe.

Which furniture is custom-made?

The solid-wood slab desk, the trunk-section coffee table and the 2.2 m wardrobe with the green corner are made to order or by a workshop. The EKTORP sofa and AGEN armchair come from IKEA.

Is a live-edge desk practical for work?

Yes, if the slab is dry and sealed. At 140×60×75 cm it matches a standard desk. The natural edge adds character but can hold dust, so wipe it regularly.
