About this design
Japandi blends Japanese restraint with Scandinavian warmth, and in this living room it is the quietest design of the set. Everything sits low: a wooden-frame MUJI sofa, a round oak-veneer coffee table and a 150 cm oak TV unit with no visual noise. The walls are a soft, warm off-white, the wardrobe on the end wall is a handle-free slatted front in pale oak, and the only sculptural shape is a paper Akari pendant that turns the evening light into a gentle glow. A warm cove strip washes the ceiling edge with amber light, while a bonsai on the table and a snake plant keep the green to a minimum. The desk is a slim 118 cm ash-veneer LISABO placed right under the window, so daylight does the work. The existing artistic parquet stays exactly as it is, sanded and finished with varnish or oil, and becomes the main pattern in the room, which is why everything else is deliberately plain. This is the recommended design: calm, easy to live in and built from named, real pieces.
Layouts
Layout scheme A
Scheme A: sofa on the left wall, TV on the right wall, desk by the window, floor-to-ceiling wardrobe on the end wall. In Japandi the sofa and the TV unit stay low and face each other across an open middle, with the round coffee table in the centre. The desk is tucked under the window so the work corner gets daylight and stays out of the seating area.
Each style uses one of four proven layouts. The plans are schematic; the window is at the top, the entrance door on the right, the wardrobe at the bottom.

Best for
Anyone who wants a calm, uncluttered room for everyday living and remote work. It suits people who prefer natural materials and low furniture, and it is the style we recommend first for this room.
Tips
Keep surfaces nearly empty: one object per shelf is enough. Choose lamps with warm light (about 2700 K) and let paper or linen shades diffuse it. Add greenery in one or two small pots rather than a jungle. If you sand and oil the existing parquet instead of varnishing it, the floor will look even calmer.
FAQ
Questions about the Japandi design
Which furniture is used in the Japandi design?
The design uses a MUJI wooden-frame 3-seater sofa, an IKEA LISABO desk, an IKEA RÖNNINGE chair, an IKEA LISTERBY round coffee table, a MUJI oak TV unit and an Akari 55A paper pendant. The built-in slatted wardrobe is made to order. Sizes and links are in the table above.
Does Japandi work in a 17.8 m² living room?
Yes. Low furniture keeps sight lines open, the pale palette reflects daylight from the balcony door and the window, and the only large element is the wardrobe on the end wall. The room is 3.42 × 5.21 m with a 2.6 m ceiling.
What gives the room its evening light?
A warm cove strip along the ceiling edge and a paper Akari pendant above the coffee table. Both use warm tones.
